G is for Ginger – Ginger RoGers the Great Glamour Gal!

Today we have Dancing with The Stars and So You Think You Can Dance, but back in the early days of TV and movies, there was only one queen of dancing and that was the Glamorous, Gorgeous and Greatly talented Ginger Rogers!

All you naturally beautiful women (and men) remember what they had to say about Fred Astaire — “Sure he was great, but don’t forget Ginger Rogers did everything he did backwards . . . and in high heels!”  Ginger and Fred had something that no one has been able to duplicate since – according to Garson Kanin, the famous Hollywood director – “The magic of Astaire and Rogers cannot be explained; it can only be felt. They created a style, a mood, a happening. They flirted, chased, courted, slid, caressed, hopped, skipped, jumped, bent, swayed, clasped, wafted, undulated, nestled, leapt, quivered, glided, spun – in sum, made love before our eyes. We have not seen their like since.”

Ginger Rogers was not only a fabulous dancer, she was also a very talented actress, a highly accomplished artist, and a devout Christian Scientist.  She directed her first stage musical, Babes In Arms, at age 74.  She received a 1952 Golden Globe Nomination for her role in Monkey Business. She was a fashion consultant  and spokesperson for the JC Penney chain from 1972-75.  In 1940 she won an Oscar as the Best Actress in a Leading Role for her dramatic performance in Kitty Foyle, beating Bette Davis in The Letter, Joan Fontaine in Rebecca, Katharine Hepburn in The Philadelphia Story, and Martha Scott in Our Town.  In 1945 she was Hollywood’s highest paid star.

In 1936 Ginger Rogers was commissioned as the only woman admiral of the Texas Navy.

As one of our great naturally beautiful women, Ginger knew the importance of being beautiful on the inside as well as on the outside  -  “The most important thing in anyone’s life is to be giving something. The quality I can give is fun, joy and happiness. This is my gift.”

G is for Gazpacho – Goes Great when it’s Global Warming!

Gazpacho for Natural Health & Coolness

I don’t want to make light of global warming, which is a very serious crisis that I wish world leaders would make a more important priority.  But baby when it’s warm outside, we need something to take the heat off.

Gazpacho is great for getting cool.  Most of us are at least a little familiar with tomato gazpacho which is really easy to make – take a bunch of tomatoes, some cucumbers, onions and green pepper – throw them all in the blender with a bit of extra virgin olive oil, garlic, tabasco to taste, salt – and blend it all up, chill and serve on a hot summer’s day.

But new on the scene is another red wonder of a cold soup – Watermelon Gazpacho!  It beats the heat out of summer.

WATERMELON GAZPACHO

Ingredients

1 ice cold 3 lb. ripe watermelon (thump it and if it sounds hollow, it’s ready!)
1 large or 2 medium peeled and seeded cucumbers
2 large celery stalks
1 small head romaine lettuce chopped
2 medium, dense, heirloom tomatoes, seeded, chopped
1-2 tsp. minced garlic
Juice from 1-2 limes, according to taste
2 TBL. white balsamic or rice vinegar
2 TBL.  fresh chopped cilantro, basil, mint or parsley
Sea salt, to taste

Instructions

Slice the watermelon, cut up most of it, taking out the seeds; reserve about 1 cup, diced fine. Toss the cut up watermelon into a Vita-Mix or blender. Add the cucumber, celery, lettuce, tomato, garlic. Pulse and blend the mix briefly to process it. Add the juice from one lime. Add the vinegar, chopped herbs, sea salt. Pulse till combined.

Pour into a storage container, add in the reserved diced watermelon. Cover and chill until serving.

If you prefer it chunkier, substitute one big yellow or orange pepper.  Garnish with some chopped mint, a dollop of yogurt and a bright slice of lemon.

Go for Greatness with Gazpacho!

G is for Ginger – Get rid of Dry Skin

Ginger for Great Natural Beauty

Ginger, that ugly looking root that tastes oh so good in so many things like Thai food and Indian food, is great for our natural beauty as well.  Ginger improves the condition of the skin by reducing inflammation while allowing your skin to radiate with healthiness as the ginger invigorates and refreshes.

For a homemade cream that will help you get rid of old flaky dry skin that looks dull, try making a luscious cream of ginger root and apricot oil with a little Vitamin E oil!

Ginger Apricot Dry Skin Cream

  • 2-inch piece of fresh ginger
  • 2 teaspoons light sesame oil
  • 2 teaspoons apricot kernel oil
  • 2 teaspoons vitamin E oil
  • ½ cup cocoa butter

Set oven on low and preheat. Finely grate the ginger to make an 1/8 teaspoon of ginger “juice.” Gently squeeze the freshly grated ginger over a small bowl. Place the ingredients (including the ginger) in a heat-proof holder and heat just until the cocoa butter is melted and the oils are blended. Pour into a clean, dry container and store in a cool dry place.   For a little more deliciousness and a citrus smell, add a drop or two of orange essential oil to the mixture.

To apply, rub the cream in small circles using an upward motion to firm and tighten the skin.   This ginger cream is a wonderful night cream, especially for you healthy senior women who need a little extra moisturizing to cut down on the damage and appearance of aging!

G is for Garnet – a Natural Beauty of a Gem

Garnet - A Natural Beauty of a Gem

Looking for love and devotion and trust and passion?  Grab a Garnet – it’s the gem for you!

From medieval times to the present, warriors have worn shields or belt buckles with garnets or carried garnets for success and protection.  Garnet can be used today to bring in success in any type of venture, or to ensure safe travels.   To bring success to your business, put a square-shaped piece of garnet in your office.

Garnet is also helpful to rid one of loneliness and isolation. This stone is often used at weddings or engagements as it is said to be a holder of unconditional love, happiness, compassion, romance, devotion and stability in relationships. Putting a piece of garnet under one’s pillow is helpful in curing depression.  And it may even help to increase sexual desire as it is the gemstone of desire and passion.

Kundalini energy coming from the root chakra at the base of the spine is stimulated when one wears red garnet, adding potency and vitality to the person and the partner.

If you’re looking for someone special to love, wearing a piece of garnet might just be the answer.  It’s known as “The Stone of Commitment,” so the love you find might be your soulmate for life!  Emotionally, garnet brings the peace of understanding, as it soothes and heals the spirit.

G is for Girdles and Garters and Girls, Oh My!

Girdles - natural Beauty?

Garter Belts - Not so naturally beautiful

Girdles and garters – Good Golly, Get Real!

Thank goodness, times change and fashions change and we no longer have to hoist ourselves up, push ourselves in, and squeeze ourselves into articles of clothing that are more like articles of torture!

Or do we???  Some people still kind of like and want the types of figures that require trussing and tying that girdles will give you.  I’m sure GaGa wears girdles, but that’s her outerwear!  Especially if it’s a girdle made out of meat!  (Sorry Gaga – we do love you!)

Girdles arent’ commonly worn today – not when we have much easier to wear Spanx.  But if you are interested in – they come in a variety of types – full body corselettes, or open bottom half girdles, girdle panties, with or without garters.  And garters can add a new dimension of sexiness to your lingerie wardrobe for those sultry, sexy evenings with your man – Truth is, garters are much more appealing to men than they could possibly be to women!

Girdles hold everything in, and they support your lower back.  So there’s some sense to them.  But I remember them as being hot and sweaty and they are so tight in the waist that they create those dreadful muffin tops we hate!

Like everything else, girdles and garters are making a comeback. None other than Victoria’s Secret is popularizing these “sexy” articles of clothing – they might make a woman feel sexier and a man might love to see them – but Good Golly, you naturally beautiful women, for me — Girdles and Garters be Gone!!
