T is for Tina Turner – Too Too Totally Terrific and Talented!

Tina Turner – 72 years young and still going strong!  Talented, terrific, and a totally awesome Senior Woman!

Tina has had quite a life and she still came out on top.  Abused and beaten by her ex-husband and partner, Ike, Tina took a back seat to him and let him control her, as so many women do.  Then, out of the shadows she blasted back again on the rock and roll scene in the 1980s and took her rightful place right on top as the Queen of Rock and Roll.  (And by the way, Ike who?)

Tina, the tall and terrific, has sold about 200 million records, been in hit movies, sold more concert tickets than any other performer, and just when you thought she was ready to roll it all up the river and retire, out she comes with “Tina’s 50th Anniversary Tour!”

So what does this say to all of you (not me!) healthy senior women who are choosing to sit on the couch or stay in bed under the covers – Get Up! Get Out! Get Moving! Get Dancing and Singing and Jumping for Joy.  If Tina can survive spousal abuse, substance abuse, suicide attempts, and being married to Ike – and come out on top of the heap on the rock and roll scene for decades and decades – what can we do at 60 or 70 or 80?  While talking to Oprah Winfrey with her friend and fellow senior diva Cher who thinks getting older ‘sucks,’ Tina Turner said – “That number doesn’t mean a thing. It just doesn’t.”

T is for Tramps, Trollops and Tarts – More Desireable to Men?

What do Men Want?

What do men really want? Do they want their naturally beautiful women to be demure and diminuitive, or do they want them to be hot and sexy?

This question is asked over and over by women, and apparently by men also.  It’s been said (by Jerry Hall, former wife of Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones) – “My mother said it was simple to keep a man, you must be a maid in the living room, a cook in the kitchen and a whore in the bedroom. I said I’d hire the other two and take care of the bedroom bit. ”

Sigmund Freud defined this question as the Madonna-whore complex and said that it arose out of the desire of men to love their mothers.  So they think of their mothers as pure and virginal and anything different is lustful and trampy.  And they look for a woman who is sweet and submissive on the outside, and pure porn on the inside (of the house).

But is that what they really want?  Do men really think about sex 24 hours a day?  OK, maybe only 16 hours a day, cause they have to sleep sometime.  The research in college-age participants seems to show that while men do think about sex more often than women, the subject crosses their mind an average of only about 19 times per day, compared to 10 times per day for women.  Personally I know men and women who haven’t thought about sex for months or years, so if this is the average, then somebody’s doing nothing but thinking about it all the time!

You Healthy Senior Women out there, please chime in and tell me what you think.  In this, the 21st century, where women are liberated and men respect our confidence and independence, do we still have to maintain the Victorian mores of sexuality, or are we past that?

T is for Try a LiTTle Tenderness

What do women really want?  Thank you Otis Redding for singing it like it really is!

We naturally beautiful women want a little tenderness.  We want to be made to feel like we are special, like we are adored, like we are important.  We want to be seen and to be heard, not to be snubbed and ignored.  We want to feel like our opinions are important and are desires are valid.

The last thing we naturally beautiful women want is for someone to treat us with indifference, to be too aloof to say hello to us at a party, to lose our telephone numbers as though it were just another scrap of paper that deserves to be tossed out.

We do want presents and we don’t want to wear that same old shabby dress over and over.  We want to be treated like the princesses we imagine ourselves to be.  We want you men to put us on pedestals and adore us and cherish us.

And if you can’t do it or won’t do it, we might not look at you twice.  Or some of us might and then years later we will wonder what went wrong, when truth is nothing ever went right.  From day one, we want you to treat us special, because we are special, because you think we are special or you care enough to pretend that we are the most special person in the world for you right this moment.

The world can be a cold and hard and impersonal place, but inside our hearts not only burns the light of natural health and natural beauty, but also the light of love, passion, sensuality, and yes, that sex that you men seem to want.

So if you want your naturally beautiful woman to be the one you come home to, why not try a little tenderness?

T is for Thyme – Tasty and TherapeuTic

Thyme for Natural health

Take a sprig of thyme from your garden and you can enjoy tons of therapeutic health benefits.  That tasty and aromatic contains a significant amount of volatile oil called thymol which has been proven to slow down aging and increase the percentage of healthy fats found in cell membranes and other cell structures. In particular, the amount of DHA (docosahexaenoic acid, an omega-3 fatty acid) in brain, kidney, and heart cell membranes is increased when you eat thyme.

Thyme has one of the highest concentrations of antioxidants of any herb and is packed full of minerals like potassium, iron, calcium, manganese, magnesium, and selenium.

If you’re worried about the bacteria that can occur on lettuce and other vegetables (and well you should be!), washing these vegetables in a solution of thyme can act as a decontaminant against Shigella, a diarrhea-causing organism.

Gargling with tepid thyme water or drinking few sips of thyme tea may help relieve coughs, sore throat, and bronchitis symptoms.  And thyme can be used as a mouthwash to cut down on cavities and gingivitis!

Insects don’t seem to like the smell of thyme (although I really do) and planting thyme in your garden could cut down on pesky garden pests.  And a great mosquito repellent is an infusion of thyme in water in a spray bottle!

If you could put thyme in a bottle, you could add some extra virgin olive oil and have yourself a great base for a Mediterranean salad dressing.  The Greeks have used thyme-infused honey for generations to decrease the incidence and effects of the common cold.  Thyme is a great flavor enhancer for a plain old chicken breast, and add some honey to it for a great Greek delight!

T is for Taking The Thermal Waters

Soak up natural health in thermal waters

Hot mineral springs are my cup of tea – or should I say my cup of hot water!  From Esalen to La Gruta in Mexico, I’ll sit in hot water and take the benefits of the thermal springs any day!

Thermal springs have been used pretty much forever for improving natural health.  Some of the benefits, besides just a delectable way to spend a day, are improved circulation and better breathing, reducing the pain and stiffness of arthritis and other muscle aches, and a natural remedy for stress relief.

People with certain conditions like high blood pressure or pregnant women need to be vigilant when they are using any type of hot springs or tubs or thermal waters.

Hot springs can be caused naturally by Mother Nature with her geysers and volcanic activity.  Or they can be artificially made by humans with gas or electricity or solar in a resort setting.  Some of the more famous hot springs in the world are found in  Steamboat Springs in Nevada, Hot Springs in Arkansas, Glenwood Springs in Colorado, Dalhousie Springs in Australia, Deildartunguhver in Iceland and Silver Springs in Florida.  I love to soak in any kind of hot tub anywhere, but I think my favorite place to take the thermal water is under the moonlit black sky in the tubs overlooking the Pacific Ocean at Esalen in Big Sur.
