Y is for the Yellow Brick Road – Yesterday’s Politics or Today’s?

The Yellow Brick Road in “The Wizard of Oz” led Dorothy to the Land of Oz where she meets the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion.  Written at the turn of the 20th century, what did the story really mean and what is its relevance to today, the turn of the 21st Century?

According to a man named Henry Littlefield, Frank Baum wrote an allegory about the politics of the time — and looking at it reminds me of the politics of today.

Is the Land of Oz our nation’s capital – Washington, DC?  Is the man behind the curtain our president, posing as a wise know-it-all while really just a hapless pawn behind the smoke and mirrors?  Dorothy can be said to represent the American people, lost and confused and trying to find her way back.  So she follows the Yellow Brick Road, which could be made of a valuable commodity like gold, down the path to the Emerald City, where money is made of green paper and in reality, worthless.  The cyclone (of financial chaos) whirls and turns and rears its ugly head, throwing Dorothy out of her farm house, and tossing her into the brink of disaster (the cyclone, the bank, Fannie Mae, help me Auntie ‘Em!). The Good Witch conspires to kill  The Wicked Witch who terrorizes Dorothy and the little people (SP????)

The Scarecrow is the first character Dorothy meets and he is the dopey, unsuspecting, and ignorant farmer wondering where his brain has gone (and maybe how his farm got taken over by the big multi-nationals like ADM and Cargill). The Cowardly Lion, once thought to be fashioned after William Jennings Bryan, a political figure who the Republicans considered indecisive and a coward, might be one of the leaders of today, no?

Michael Moore would probably see the Tin Man as the icon of Flint, Michigan where the factories have closed and the hearts of the people have rusted shut.  And what will the Tin Man do if he runs out of oil, oh my!

The Winged Monkeys, once the powerful indigenous natives of the prairies, say, “Once we were a free people, living happily in the great forest, flying from tree to tree, eating nuts and fruit and doing just as we pleased without calling anybody master. […] This was many years ago, long before Oz came out of the clouds to rule over this land.”

And the man behind the curtain, the Wizard, changes his appearance to please everyone, and in the end, turns out to be an illusion capable of doing nothing, and telling Dorothy and her friends, “I have been making believe.”

Oh my!

X is for Xtraordinary, Xciting, Xcellent – U!

Smile – You’re X-ceptional

Stop what you’re doing right now and walk right up to the mirror and repeat after me:  I AM X-CEPTIONAL!  I AM X-TRAORDINARY!  I AM X-CITING!  I LOVE MYSELF!  Now was that so hard???  For so many of us, yes it is.  It’s hard to really feel good about ourselves, to really love the person looking back at us from the mirror.  We may think to ourselves, “I’m not good enough.”  I’m not pretty enough, not thin enough, not smart enough, and on and on and on.

I’m telling you right here and right now you are loveable and wonderful and exceptional just as you are.   Need some help convincing yourself?  Let’s go through some easy (ok, maybe not so very easy) steps together:

1.  Stop criticizing yourself.  When you hear yourself saying something bad about yourself, yell “Cancel!”  It will be a wake up call to think or say something good about yourself.

2.  Stop “Should-ing” on yourself.  Next time you think you “should” be doing something, change it to “I could be doing . . . “  It’s freeing to make choices and to not be “should-ing” all over yourself all the time.

3.  Stop comparing yourself to other people.  Yes, some people do have more than others.  It will always be that way on some level.  If you have food in the frig and a roof over your head, you’re doing well.  If you have a computer and the ability to read this post, you’re probably better off than 95% of the people in the world.

4.  Celebrate your successes.  Even if it’s just something little and insignificant, congratulate yourself on the accomplishment.  You got up this morning – Yay!  You turned on the computer – Yippee!  You wrote 100 words on your blog – Hip Hip Hooray!  Little successes add up and inspire you on to bigger ones.

5.  Hang around with positive people who support you.  Nothing drags a person down more than spending time with negative Nellies or judgmental people.

6.  Do what you love.  Find your passion.  Indulge your desires.  (If you crave chocolate, go ahead and eat one piece if it will make you happy – we don’t want to go overboard on some things – see previous post – M is for Mindful Munching)

7.  Forgive and forget.  Everybody makes mistakes.  We’re only human.  Learn from your mistakes and move on.  Forgive other people for their mistakes too.

8.  Help someone else.  It’s hard to be depressed and sad about your own lot in life when you are bringing joy into someone else’s life.

9.  Appreciate yourself for who you truly are.  Allow yourself to feel your emotions.  If you’re sad, feel sad.  If you’re happy, give yourself permission to really feel happy.   Shakespeare was right when he said, “To thine own self, be true.”

10.  Put some joy into your life.  Relax a little (get a massage, take a bath).  Laugh a lot (watch a funny movie, play with a puppy).  Express your gratitude (see previous post G is for Gratitude).

And now go back to that mirror, lift up the corners of your mouth and do the one thing that will really make you feel wonderful –  SMILE, SMILE, SMILE!!!

W is for Wrinkles – not Welcome for Women!

We Don’t Want Wrinkles

We’re not getting older, we’re getting better!  And we’re getting even better without wrinkles.  Here are 10 tips for preventing those wrinkles we don’t want!

1.   Drink Water.  I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again –  Water is the #1 key to natural health and natural beauty.  Our bodies are mostly water and when you’re dehydrated, it’s like a dehydrated grape – A Prune.  (See previous post D is for Drink Water – How Much is Enough?)

2.  Exfoliate your old, dead skin.  Dry flaky skin on your face and body will make you look old, sallow and depleted.  Try a natural sugar exfoliants or have some microdermabrasion.  Getting rid of the old will make room for the new.

3.  Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize.  First, clean your face.  Don’t go to bed with makeup on – No, no, no!  Clean your face with a gentle cleanser and then apply a moisturizer.  Here at NBW, we’ve got lots of suggestions and recipes for gentle homemade moisturizer using almond or olive oil — or use a $100 cream if you wish.  Just make sure you put something on your face.

4.  Wear sunscreen – all the time.  A tan may be flattering, but wrinkles are not – so limit the amount of time you spend in the sun.  And never, ever allow your neck and chest to get sun-burnt, that’s where you’ll first see those signs of aging. There are some healthy sunscreens.  Smear them on your naturally beautiful hands and faces (we neglect our hands and they are always exposed to the sun’s rays).

5.   Get a good night’s sleep.  When you haven’t had enough sleep & you’re tired all day, the body produces excess cortisol, a hormone that breaks down skin cells.  See Previous Post – S is for Sleep – Some Timely Tips for Sound Snoozing).

6.  Don’t squint, you’ll get wrinkly eyes.  Don’t scowl.  You’ll get frown lines.  But do smile – those smile lines around your face show that you’ve lived a good and happy life!

7.  Eat healthy.  The healthier you eat, the better your skin will look.  The essential fatty acids in salmon and other cold water fish will help nourish skin and keep it plump and youthful, helping to reduce wrinkles.  Anti-oxidant-rich fruits and vegetables help fight the damage caused by free radicals and will keep your skin looking younger and more radiant.

8.   Don’t sleep on your stomach.  If you sleep on your face, your brow will become furrowed.  And if you sleep on your side, you’ll get wrinkles on your cheeks and chin.

9.  Don’t smoke.  We all know by now that it will kill you.  And if that doesn’t make you stop, just know that it will also wrinkle you up like a prune.  Smoking increases the breakdown of collagen and elastin which speeds up the thinning of your skin and brings on those nasty aging wrinkles.

10.  Don’t worry. Be Happy! Stress and tension speed up the wrinkling process. Remember — we all get old, but some of us stay naturally beautiful forever!

How to Get a Good Night’s Sleep

I’m so tired, I haven’t slept a wink.  I’m so tired – good lyrics for a song, but not a good way to face a new day!  Sleep enables the body to recharge and repair.  Sleep is needed to keep your body healthy.  It regulates hormones and affects the immune system.  And when you’re well rested, you look alive and vital, and therefore you need sleep to maintain your natural beauty.

What can you do to get a good night’s sleep?  Here are 10 tips for getting a great night’s sleep -

1. Make sleep a priority.  Go to sleep when you are tired.  Turn out the lights and close your eyes.  If  15 minutes go by and you’re still wide awake, get up and get out of your bedroom.  When you’re tired again, come back, shut the lights and go to sleep.

2.  Use your bedroom for sleep or for sex only.  Don’t let your body get accustomed to working or even reading in bed.

3.  Set your internal rhythm time by going to bed at approximately the same time every day, even on the weekends.

4. Eat lightly and don’t eat 2 hours before going to sleep.

5.  Avoid caffeine and other stimulants like alcohol and nicotine before going to bed.

6.  Exercise in the morning rather than at night.

7. Choose comfortable bedding.  Find mattresses and pillows that suit you.  Try some soft, try some firm and find out which works best for you.

8.  Naps are great (see previous post - N is for Napping) – but limit the amount and length of daytime sleeping if it’s interfering with nighttime sleeping.

9.   Keep a window open to allow fresh air to circulate, but keep heat and light out of your bedroom.

10.  Go to sleep before midnight.  Research shows that the sleep you get before midnight is more beneficial and deeper than what you get after midnight.

If all else fails, you can occasionally turn to natural remedies to help you get that valuable sleep we all need to stay young and look beautiful.  A little bit of warm milk (not too much so you’re up in the bathroom all night) has calming tryptophan to relax you.  Lavender essential oil sprinkled on your pillow or a pillow made out of lavender over your eyes will shut out the light and lull you to sleep.  Herbal remedies such as Kava Kava and valerian work well, and so does melatonin, the sleep-regulating  hormone we lose as  we age.

U is for Underwear – Underneath it all – R U Comfy?

Underwear Undercover for U!

When’s the last time you changed your underwear?  No – I don’t mean daily.  I mean — are you wearing the same kind of underwear you wore in high school, or ten years ago, or 50?

It’s probably time for a change right now.  Those old lady cotton briefs that you’ve been sporting for half a century are out of style, and probably out of shape, and not helping you to be naturally beautiful at all!

Unless you go commando (and good for you if you do!), we wear some kind of undergarment every day.  And it does make a difference in your overall appearance.  Panty lines do nothing for natural beauty!  And as far as I’m concerned, the dental floss of thong is just plain icky and uncomfortable – and why bother?

If you’re up for a change, then here are some tips to help you choose this all-important piece of clothing that you wear every day so close to your skin.  First of all, go for comfort.  Too much and you look like you’ve got extra skin.  Too little (the thong) and you’re pulling at them and trying to adjust all day!  I like the seamless boy short these days – they’re pretty, they’re comfortable and they don’t create panty lines.

Choose the right size.  Too big and there’s too much material in your pants and an all-day wedgie.  Too tight and there’s a bulge — and the last thing you want is tight elastic creating that very ugly and unwanted muffin top (see J is for Jeans and Muffin Tops!

Fabric really counts when it comes to underwear.  Silk and satin might be sexy, but they don’t breathe well, and that will make you sweat and set you up for infections and crotch itch!  Fabrics that work well for wearing next to your skin are cotton (it comes in sexy these days!), Lycra, bamboo, cashmere, and Microfiber.  And silk-feel nylons and high quality polyesters that have cotton crotches come in great, comfy styles that look good and feel good.

Natural Beauty starts from the inside.   Nothing can age you more than looking dumpy, so for a youthful look, for goodness sakes – change your panties!
