M is for Makeup – Make Yours Conscious and Healthy

We women wear makeup for a lot of different reasons.  We wear it to call attention to ourselves.  We wear it to attract mates.  We wear it because the Mad Men of Madison Avenue tell us to.  $35 billion – that’s the size of the cosmetics industry. 33 percent – the number of personal care products containing at least one ingredient linked to cancer.  And one of the ingredients in common makeup we all use can really kill you – 77 percent of cosmetics you wash off contain paraben; 99 percent (yes, almost 100%) of sunscreens contain paraben which has been linked to the development of breast cancer.

Luckily for naturally beautiful women like us who care about what we put in our bodies and on our bodies, an organization exists that is devoted to certifying green cosmetic companies – Certified Green Cosmetics Organization – http://www.certifiedgreencosmetics.org/.

You can also check into a list of conscious cosmetics companies published by The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics – http://safecosmetics.org/display.php?modin=50

There are some companies who care more about our natural health and our natural beauty and produce products that won’t hurt us or the environment – Avalon Organics, Dr. Bronner’s, Burt’s Bees, Dr. Hauschka Skin Care, Aveda and Tom’s of Maine

Now that you’ve bought your new conscious cosmetics, it’s time to throw out the old (conscious or not!).  Old makeup becomes coated with bacteria and germs.  When you continue to apply these old cosmetics to your skin, there is a good possibility of developing a nasty fungus or major infection.

Eye makeup that you apply by dipping into it and putting in on the sensitive eye area should be replaced every three months.  Creams that are liquid-y and kept in tightly covered containers are the worst culprits as they might contain oil that becomes rancid and yucky bacteria – replace them often!

The FDA doesn’t require makeup to have expiration dates!  But they do publish a list of how long you should keep your makeup before tossing?

Three months:  Eye makeup, especially liquids and creams

Six months: Skin care products (stored in a jar), liquid foundation (jar), sunscreen

Twelve months: Skin care products (stored in a pump), liquid foundation (pump), concealer, cream blush

Eighteen months: Powders, pencils and lipstick or gloss

E is for Elegance – Essentially Easy for Everyone

Elegance – taste, grace, refinement and style – all traits of truly naturally beautiful women.  Elegance comes not only from the outside, but also has to do with an inner sense of peace and luxury and richness.  Elegance has to do with the qualities of self-confidence and self-esteem we all can practice and achieve.

Elegant women cultivate a sense of beauty.   Money may or may not buy elegance – you can actually purchase elegant things at Goodwill or a neighborhood garage sale.  Instead of spending money on a bunch of cheap throwaway clothes, you can buy one piece of elegantly made,  exquisite classic clothing and learn how to accessorize.

No matter what your pocketbook may hold, you can be elegant. If you can’t afford Chanel, look for something similar at an outlet store, or Off 5th or Last Call by Neiman Marcus or Loehmann’s.

You can go to a consignment shop or a garage sale, or you can organize a Clothing Swap Party and exchange clothes while having fun with your friends (see N is for Naked Lady Parties).  Money can buy you clothes, but it can’t necessarily buy you taste.  Pick up a copy of the latest Vogue or Elle and look at what’s beautiful.  Then go out and get the look on your own budget.

Sure, having a lot of money can make elegance easier, but you can be a naturally elegant woman with these tips that don’t cost much:

  1.  Smile – You will look more elegant if you think positive thoughts on the inside and radiate happiness and positivity on the outside.
  2. Always wear clean and unwrinkled clothing  - and polish your shoes for an elegant look.
  3. Quantity doesn’t count for elegance – quality does.  Clean out your closets and get rid of everything that doesn’t look right, fit right, and make you feel fabulous!
  4. Be impeccable with your words (see I is for Impeccability – with your Word).  The Four Agreements of Don Miguel Ruiz is a simple spiritual practice that will bring elegance into your world.  Be polite.  Speak kindly of people. Keep negativity to yourself.
  5. Home elegance can come with a few fine touches, like one beautiful flower in a lovely vase – simply divine!
  6. Practice elegance in your relationships.  Learn one or two things and do them well.  Develop friendships with people who share your interests.
  7.  Be genuinely interested in other people.  Be a good listener, rather than a good talker.
  8. Express gratitude whenever you can.  Send a thank-you note (or email) to a hostess.  Reciprocate invitations.
  9. Be of service to the world.  Give time if you don’t have money; help others with love and compassion.
  10. And once again, smile – Clothes do not make the naturally elegant woman, smiles do!

F is for Facelifts – For u or Forget about it?

Natural Beauty or Nature's Freak

You can’t talk about facelifts and plastic surgery these days without talking about Joan Rivers.  The woman has had something like 740 cosmetic procedures done to just about every part of her body, including her vagina (maybe?).  Maybe you’re forty or maybe you’re fifty, but are you ready to face a facelift like Joan?

COST OF FACE LIFTS*
Cost Range:
$7,000-$13,000

Average Total Cost: $9,500
Surgeons fee: $6,000
Anesthesiologist: $1,200
Facility fee: $1,700
Hospital fee: $600

We all want to continue to look beautiful no matter how old we are, but is surgery really the answer?  Look at how much it costs?  You could eat a lot of healthy food for a long time for that amount of money.

How safe is it?  Ask a lot of questions.  Do a lot of research.  Don’t just inquire about the surgeon; find out all you can about the anesthesiologist –the person who’s really got your life in their hands.  The surgeon can be a great mechanic and artist, but it’s the person with the needle and the drugs who is really important.  Then there’s the recovery period when you can’t move or eat or do anything for yourself because you’re in pain and discomfort and you need someone to take care of all your personal needs – all of them!

Why do you want this?  You need to really go deep into your inner feelings – do you think it will change your life?  Do you think you will find love, abundance, purpose and meaning?  Do you think it will improve your self-esteem and pick you up out of the depths of depression?  Do you believe you will, at 65 or 75, wake up looking like Angelina Jolie?

If you have explored all of your reasons and it comes out YES!, then do it.  But if you think that lifting your face will lift you from old to young, or ugly to gorgeous, then maybe you should think again.  Or consider fillers.  Or eat healthy foods and drink lots of water and stay out the fun.

Facelifts for Natural Beauty?  I’d say For some, For sure, For others, Forget about it!

B is for Bundchen is a Blonde Bombshell – Does she have more fun?

Bundchen - a Blonde Bombshell with Beauty & Bucks

Beauty, Blonde, Babe – Bundchen is!  A Blonde Bombshell!  Jean Harlow was the first Hollywood starlet to be termed “A Blonde Bombshell” and it’s been used ever since to describe flaxen-haired beauties.

What is it about blondes that make them seem better or babe-er or ???

Do you have to be blonde to be beautiful?  No.

Do you have to be a Hollywood starlet to be beautiful?  No.

Do blondes have more fun?  No.

In a quiz for men conducted on OKCupid, (http://www.okcupid.com/), an online dating site, the blonde bombshell is the “cheerleader,” “Miss Popularity,” the one out of your league!”  The Blonde has the beach-y bright hair, the flirty smile; and as a man, you will have tons of competition, cause the Blonde Bombshell is the object of every man’s desire!

The redhead is “The Rebel,” “The Wild Child,” the “Sexpot!”  She is the sexual party animal with the fiery temper.  Right?!

I came up a strong brunette.   I’m the girl next door, the bookworm, but I’m the one you take home to mama!

I was a blonde for a year and it was fun. I was a redhead for many years and now I am back to being a brunette.  And pretty soon, I’m going to have to give up and become a silver-haired – hopefully silver-haired fox!  (See previous post – S is for Silver Threads among the gold – Sexy!).  According to the quiz, maybe I’m a redhead/brunette – the sexy rebel also full of quiet charm and romance.  Or maybe I’m a blonde/redhead who is popular and sexy, or . . .

It’s kind of like the age-old question for men – Mary Ann or Ginger (for those of you too young to understand – they’re the women from Gilligan’s Island) – When I was young and growing up, I thought every man wanted the hot, sexy Ginger.  What a surprise when I became an adult and found that in their secret hearts, most men lusted over Mary Ann!  I’m glad I’m a brunette now!

B is for Beer – a Boon for your natural Beauty

Beer is a Boon for natural Beauty

It’s Superbowl week and a lot of thought is being given to beer.  We here at Natural Beauty and Health for Women are thinking about beer also, but not pouring it down our throats, but pouring it on our heads.

Rinsing your hair with beer is a great way to get rich of excess oil that dulls your hair.  Beer will also make your hair shiny while adding volume and body.

Beer works well as a hair rinse because of the proteins found in the malt and hops, which serve to rebuild and repair hair damage.  The vitamin B and natural sugars in the beer add shine and body.   Flat beer works best to rinse hair, and it helps not to have too strong an odor (it’s not so naturally beautiful to walk around smelling like a brewery – except maybe in the Pacific Northwest!).  Shampoo and rinse out your hair as usual.  Pour the warm flat beer on your head and massage it into your hair.  Rinse with warm water and get ready for shiny, lustrous locks.

Hollywood celebrities, when they’re not drinking it, applaud the benefits of beer for shiny, silky hair.  Catherine Zeta-Jones says that she washes her hair in a  mixture of beer and honey.

For a beautifying beer hair rinse,  combine 1 ounce of water, 2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar see previous post V is for Vinegar – ACV for Natural Health), 1 ounce of flat beer, and 5 drops of your favorite essential oil. Rub the mixture throughout hair. Rinse with warm water to remove stubborn buildup and enhance shine.

Jojoba Oil is a rich moisturizing natural oil and added to beer will provide luster and luxuriousness.   Add one teaspoon of jojoba oil to one cup of warm, flat beer and after shampooing and rinsing, pour it on your head and work it.  Rinse with warm water for a Beautiful Boost of Natural Beauty for your Bangs (and the rest of your hair!).
