All over the world, people believe that walnuts are aphrodisiacs and we love natural foods that wake up our wonder! In some cultures, walnuts rather than rice are thrown at newlyweds (please remove the hard outer shell).
In Luxembourg, you’ll even find a walnut festival to celebrate the many facts of this nut. In October in Vianden, after the walnut harvest, the streets are lined with stalls and shops celebrating, the walnut! Walnut bread, walnut cake, walnut soap, walnut candy, walnut jewelry, walnut wine, and walnut liqueur – watch out for October nights in nutty Luxembourg!
Walnuts are rich in protein and high in potassium, zinc and iron (just like oysters, which are also valued as aphrodisiacs). Most probably the ingredient in walnuts is the arginine, an amino acid that is absorbed into the body and transformed into nitric oxide, known to help to enlarge blood vessels and enhance blood flow to the penis (see previous post – V is for Viagra – Herbal Varieties).
Researchers at the University Malaya in Kuala Lumpur have so much confidence in the aphrodisiacal qualities of walnuts that they have produced an herbal Viagra called N-Hanz. Dr. Kim Kah Hwi at the university became fascinated with the ancient Roman practice of eating walnuts to increase libido, he extracted a substance from walnuts to make the Viagra-like N-Hanz and his volunteers swear it works!
Even if you’re not looking to enhance your sex life, then look to the walnut to enhance your life, period. The omega-3 fatty acids in walnuts are valuable aids to protecting the body from cardiovascular diseases by preventing erratic rhythms in the heart, making the blood less likely to clot inside the arteries, and improving the ratio of good to bad cholesterol. If you’re healthy, you’re a lot more sexy! Wow for the Wonderful Walnut!
