Sometimes the bull gets you by the horns instead of the other way around and you just gotta have an attitude adjustment. We’ve said it before, shit happens. Things go wrong, the dog eats your homework and life just sometimes sucks. So what are you, a naturally beautiful woman (or man) going to do about it? Cry – yes! Yell – Yes! Scream – Yes! And now that that five minutes is over, you’ve got to, got to, got to do something different.
In Twelve Step recovery programs, it’s called “Acting As If.” It’s like going back in time to your childhood and playing “Make Believe.” It’s like Adam Sandler in “Remote Control” or rubbing the genie lamp in Alladin. It might not be real, but sometimes make believe is what you need in the moment.
Pretend you’re happy. Put on a happy face. Watch a funny movie and laugh. Dress up in a floozy costume or dance naked to Zydeco music – really loud Zydeco music.
SMILE. Just the act of smiling and having the corners of your mouth turn up instead of down might fool your brain into sending out happy hormones and neurotransmitters instead of those dopey, droopy, depressing ones that were hanging around before. The brain can’t tell the difference between what’s real and what’s imaginary, so it just might start putting out feeling good thoughts, just cause you’re putting in feeling good thoughts.
Hey look – why not take ten minutes, or an hour, or even a whole day to change your attitude. You never know – it might just change your life!

“Fake it till you make it”! Smile and laugh, and act happy until we truly feel it. It’s worth a shot, and found that when at times I’ve felt the lowest of the low, the act of laughing or smiling at a funny Facebook posting or song I hear on the radio is enough to give me a warm positive burst deep in my stomach and chest. It’s definitely worth a shot; there really is nothing to lose.
