E is for Elegance – Essentially Easy for Everyone

Elegance – taste, grace, refinement and style – all traits of truly naturally beautiful women.  Elegance comes not only from the outside, but also has to do with an inner sense of peace and luxury and richness.  Elegance has to do with the qualities of self-confidence and self-esteem we all can practice and achieve.

Elegant women cultivate a sense of beauty.   Money may or may not buy elegance – you can actually purchase elegant things at Goodwill or a neighborhood garage sale.  Instead of spending money on a bunch of cheap throwaway clothes, you can buy one piece of elegantly made,  exquisite classic clothing and learn how to accessorize.

No matter what your pocketbook may hold, you can be elegant. If you can’t afford Chanel, look for something similar at an outlet store, or Off 5th or Last Call by Neiman Marcus or Loehmann’s.

You can go to a consignment shop or a garage sale, or you can organize a Clothing Swap Party and exchange clothes while having fun with your friends (see N is for Naked Lady Parties).  Money can buy you clothes, but it can’t necessarily buy you taste.  Pick up a copy of the latest Vogue or Elle and look at what’s beautiful.  Then go out and get the look on your own budget.

Sure, having a lot of money can make elegance easier, but you can be a naturally elegant woman with these tips that don’t cost much:

  1.  Smile – You will look more elegant if you think positive thoughts on the inside and radiate happiness and positivity on the outside.
  2. Always wear clean and unwrinkled clothing  - and polish your shoes for an elegant look.
  3. Quantity doesn’t count for elegance – quality does.  Clean out your closets and get rid of everything that doesn’t look right, fit right, and make you feel fabulous!
  4. Be impeccable with your words (see I is for Impeccability – with your Word).  The Four Agreements of Don Miguel Ruiz is a simple spiritual practice that will bring elegance into your world.  Be polite.  Speak kindly of people. Keep negativity to yourself.
  5. Home elegance can come with a few fine touches, like one beautiful flower in a lovely vase – simply divine!
  6. Practice elegance in your relationships.  Learn one or two things and do them well.  Develop friendships with people who share your interests.
  7.  Be genuinely interested in other people.  Be a good listener, rather than a good talker.
  8. Express gratitude whenever you can.  Send a thank-you note (or email) to a hostess.  Reciprocate invitations.
  9. Be of service to the world.  Give time if you don’t have money; help others with love and compassion.
  10. And once again, smile – Clothes do not make the naturally elegant woman, smiles do!

E is for Elegance – Every Naturally BEautiful Woman Should bE ElEgant

Elegance and Natural Beauty

Audrey and Lauren – two of the most beautiful and most excellent examples of elegance we have to admire and emulate.

There’s also Grace Kelly, Catherine Deneuve, and of course, Elizabeth Taylor – mostly in her younger years.

What does it take to be an elegant woman?  It really doesn’t have anything to do with money.  Today, you can go to a consignment shop or even Goodwill and pick up some elegant clothing at rock bottom prices.  And don’t forget those Naked Lady Parties we’ve talked about where your girlfriends swap what they don’t want any more – there could be elegant clothing lurking there for you to find.

It’s more than just clothing – although style and taste do count for quite a bit.  To exude an air of elegance takes attention to how you speak, how you walk, how you conduct yourself in situations.  Personal grooming bespeaks whether you are elegant or not – mostly it’s apparent when you’re not – wrinkled clothing, roots showing, nails chipped, torn or dirty clothes, sloppy hair.  It doesn’t take a lot to iron your clothes and polish your nails.  I’m sitting here with my roots showing and believe you me, it doesn’t look elegant at all!

Posture is so important when you want to be looked upon as being elegant.  Your mother was right when she said, “Stand up straight.  Don’t slouch.”  Listen to Mom.

Manners and speech count too.  Remember to say “Please” and “Thank You.”  Speak softly.  Don’t curse.  Think before you speak so that you only speak kindly.

Elegance comes from within, not from the outside.  You may ask if striving to be elegant is necessary in the 21st century.  I say it’s always important, even for the most radical feminist political activist.  We are women. We are strong.  We want respect and admiration.  We want people to listen to our opinions and buy our products and read our books.  We want to be looked on as loving, kind, generous, concerned with the world, good mothers, good sisters, good friends.  All of these are elegant.  And every naturally beautiful woman concerned with things like natural beauty and natural health, can also strive to be concerned with her natural elegance.

E is for Elegance – How to be Exquisite on Any Budget

Timeless elegance

Natural Elegance

You can be elegant, no matter what your budget may be.  If you can’t afford Valentino, maybe you can find something similar at an outlet store, or Off 5th or Last Call by Neiman Marcus or Loehmann’s.

Or you can go to a garage sale or a consignment shop, or my very favorite – go to a Naked Lady Party (see N is for Naked Lady Parties).  Money may buy you clothes, but it doesn’t necessarily buy you taste.  A good friend of mine once handed me the latest copy of Vogue and I said I didn’t have that kind of money to spend.  Her advice was just look at it and then go to where I could afford to shop and put together a similar look!  Great advice!

Money might make it easier – but if you want to look exquisite and radiate elegance, these tips will help you no matter what your budget may be:

Smile – Elegant women think positive thoughts on the inside and radiate positivity and happiness on the outside.

Polish your shoes, wear clean and ironed clothes – it just looks more elegant!

Get rid of the clutter in your closet.  Throw out the waste and the things that don’t fit.  Gather together a few, maybe 15, quality and well-made outfits that you can mix and match.  Remember, you can shop at Goodwill and still have elegance!

Speak kindly of people.  Be polite.  Don’t use crude language.  Look people in the eye when you speak with them.  Keep your negatively to yourself or a close friend.

Decorate your home with simple style and one or two fine touches – a beautiful flower in a vase is elegance simplified!

Develop a few interests and learn them well.  Cultivate friendships with people who enjoy doing the same things as you.  Do one or two things well.

Be genuinely interested in other people.  Listen to what they have to say, rather than talking about yourself.

Send a thank you to a host or hostess. Reciprocate when someone includes you in a gathering.

Go forth into the world with love and compassion.  If you don’t have money to give to a cause, give time, help others.

And once again, smile – Clothes do not make the naturally beautiful woman, smiles do!

E is for Elegance – Emulate these Excellent Women

Elegant Grace

Elegant Catherine Deneuve

Elegant Audrey

Elegance – refinement, taste, style, grace – all characteristics of these lovely women.  Yes, they were Hollywood icons, probably with tons of stylists walking behind them doing their hair and makeup and trailing wardrobes racks full of Valentino and Chanel.

But more than that, they exuded a sense of peace and luxury and ultimate richness.  This comes not only from the outer beauty they each certainly had, but also inner qualities of self-confidence and self-esteem that we naturally beautiful women can practice and achieve.

Elegant women have wonderful posture.  When your mother (and my mother looked just like that photo of Catherine Deneuve!) told you not to slouch and to sit up straight, she was guiding you on your journey to elegance.

Elegant women cultivate a sense of beauty.  You don’t have to be a millionairess to have beautiful things – they can be found at Goodwill or a neighborhood garage sale.  You just have to learn how to spot a well-made article of clothing or home decor.  You don’t need 100 pieces of trashy clothing that will wear out and look tacky.  Buy a few pieces of really exquisite classic clothing and learn how to accessorize.

If you don’t have the funds to travel to elegant places, learn how to make a few elegant dishes from a foreign cuisine.  Throw small dinner parties where you can show off your elegant knowledge!

V is for Valentino – Very Understated Elegance

Valentino for Natural Beauty and Elegance

In the 21st century, being a “lady” is equated with Lady Gaga, the pop icon who wears meat.  But being a lady used to mean a lot more – it used to mean having taste and elegance and simple, refined style.  No one exemplified elegance and ladylike-ness in fashion like Valentino.  He might be a man, but he certainly knows how to dress a women.   “I don’t think any man in the world wants to go out with a woman dressed like a boy,” he said.

Valentino designed clothing for women, clothing that feels like a woman should feel, and looks like a real woman should look – feminine, elegant, tasteful, chic – all of these words show up in his fashions.  Valentino comes from the elegant world of Paris couturiers who designed clothes for an elite group of women perched on little gold chairs.  Valentino’s most famous quote is, “Elegance is the balance between proportion, emotion, and surprise.”  His signature clothing has been worn by Princess Diana, the royal families of Belgium and Greece and Norway.  He dressed the classic  elegant women like Jackie O, Elizabeth Taylor and Nancy Reagan, as well as today’s celebrities such as Halle Berry, Gwyneth Paltrow and Nicole Kidman.  Valentino’s life of fashion and philanthropy (he created L.I.F.E., a charity for the support of AIDS-related patients that he co-founded with Elizabeth Taylor and his lifetime companion Giancarlo Giammetti) was memorialized in the 2008 documentary,  Valentino: The Last Emperor.

Valentino and Naturally Beautiful Women

A dress made by Valentino was designed to celebrate a woman’s silhouette in order to reveal her sensuality.  Wearing a Valentino dress can transform even a Lady Gaga into an elegant lady of refinement and culture.  Valentino retired in 2008, but his clothing will remain the “haute” in haute couture forever.
