E is for Elephants and rEmEmbEring EvErything!

An elephant never forgets, but we do as we age, right? Sometimes we forget things.  Where’d I put my keys? Where’s the car?     What did I come into this room for???????

As we get older, forgetfulness is natural.  It’s not always a serious problem like Alzheimer’s or dementia.  It could just be the result of having learned way too much over the last 60 or 70 or 80 years.

There are ways to make your memory as sharp as an elephant’s.  You can start by eating the right foods which will keep your brain and your body healthy as you grow older.  Leafy green vegetables have plenty of folic acid to aid in memory retention.  Salmon, tuna and sardines all have Omega-3 fatty acids which help reduce inflammation, a potential cause of memory loss in adults.  B Vitamin deficiency can be mistaken for Alzheimer’s disease because it increases memory loss.  To replenish your stores of Thiamine or Vitamin B1 you can take a good supplement, but nuts like pistachios are full of thiamine, as are tuna, spinach, mushrooms and flax seeds.

Herbal remedies are effective and safe, with no adverse side effects.    Ginkgo Biloba can inhibit the oxidation of the brain and increase the blood circulation, getting more information to and through the body.   Huperzine A, a substance extracted from club moss (Huperzia serrata), helps to slow down acetylcholine breakdown.  Acetylcholine is one of the brain neurotransmitters that is being studied with relation to Alzheimer’s.

Rhodiola (Rhodiola rosea), (100 mg. daily) is an herb that helps increase concentration and also improves memory by stimulating the immune system.  Rhodiola also helps to improve sleep and fight depression, enhance mental and physical performance, as well as stimulate the nervous system.  Rhodiola has been shown to be an effective antioxidant.

Rosemary is called the “herb of remembrance” and is an essential oil used in aromatherapy to increase mental clarity and reduce poor memory, as well as increase concentration and decrease fatigue. Essential oil of basil can help to wake up a foggy brain and improve mental clarity.  Peppermint essential oil also perks up the brain and helps you to remember.

And there’s a new extract of the periwinkle plant called vinpocetine that is being studied as a way to increase blood circulation and bring more nutrients like glucose and oxygen to the brain to help it work more efficiently so you can remember things more effectively.

Foods and herbs work great on memory, and so does exercise.  Just as important as keeping your body agile and active, so is exercising your brain to keep it functioning at top potential.  Play games with words and numbers.  Do puzzles and mind exercises like Sudoku.  Keep your mind working – after all, we know a mind is a terrible thing to waste!

B is for Basil and it’s many Benefits – Bravo!

Basil for Natural Beauty and Love

Yes, you can fall in love with basil, or at least by using basil in your food or in your bath.  And even if basil doesn’t help you fall in love, for centuries it has been thought to bring luck.  Especially if you’re a scorpion, because scorpions thrive under basil plants.  Basil has actually been applied to scorpion stings to reduce the pain and consequences.

In Indian tradition requires the head of a Hindu be bathed in Tulsi (holy basil) water before being buried and a tulsi leaf is placed on the chest over the heart. This practice ensures the dead person will enter Paradise.

And what does this have to do with love, you might ask?  In Italy, basil became the herb of love and young girls would wear a sprig of the plant (without scorpions, hopefully) in their hair to announce their desire to find love.  In Romania,  if a boy accepts a sprig of basil from a girl, it means they are engaged to be married.

Basil is considered one of the best aphrodisiacs, especially for women.  Its uplifting aroma is used in aromatherapy to combat depression and anxiety (both are probably two of the most potent turnoffs to sexual desire).  Aromatherapists prize basil for its relaxing, sedative and anti-depressant qualities and a bath infused with basil essential oil is sure to raise your spirits!

As if that’s not enough, basil is used in natural health for relieving headaches (including migraines), anxiety, cold and flu symptom, earaches, sinus congestion, as well as those two we’ve mentioned – depression and fatigue. Essential oil of basil is loaded with antioxidants,  as well as antimicrobial and antiviral components.   Basil is a great aid for digestion and is used to treat stomach conditions.  Basil balances the nervous system and is considered an excellent nerve tonic. Sweet basil is said to be able to restore strength and clarity and is a valuable aid for people who need to concentrate and study.  A little drop of basil on a tissue or handkerchief works wonders for students before and during exams!

N is for Nettles and Noses – Natural Help for Nasal Allergies

Nettles for Natural Health of Noses

I’m having my first allergy attack in years and because I write about natural health, I am using only natural remedies to relieve the discomfort.  I did take an antihistamine to get to sleep last night – even naturally beautiful and healthy women have to resort to modern medicine sometimes!

I went to a botanica or herb store and was able to convey my needs to the woman in the store who only spoke Spanish.  Luckily I had done my research and had found out that what I wanted was nettles, and the Spanish word for nettles is ortigas.  Of course, I didn’t necessarily understand anything else this precious little woman said to me, but I went home and took half of this little bundle of sticks and dried plant matter and made it into a tea.

Lo and behold, I actually felt better in a little bit. We’ve come a long way in medicine, but that doesn’t mean that the old ways aren’t good also and that just because something is “old” it is useless or no good and should be tossed out to make way for the new.  (A great lesson for us naturally beautiful and healthy senior women, yes?)

A Short History of Medicine

I have an earache:

2000 B.C. — Here, eat this herb.
1000 A.D. — That herb is heathen. Here, say this prayer.
1850 A.D. — That prayer is superstition. Here, drink this potion.
1940 A.D. — That potion is snake oil. Here, swallow this pill.
1985 A.D. — That pill is ineffective. Here, take this antibiotic.
2000 A.D. – That antibiotic is artificial. Here, eat this herb

To brew a nettle tea to relieve allergies,  just boil several large nettle leaves in 1 to 2 cups of water. Allow the tea to cool and steep. There’s not much taste to nettle tea, so if you wish to improve the flavor, you can add a few peppermint leaves to the tea as well.

F is for Forgetfulness – don’t Forget to Find Herbal Cures

Memory Enhancing Herbs for Natural Health

Food and water are essential for good brain function and decreasing age-related memory loss, and therefore increase your natural health.

And there are herbal supplements that will aid your memory as well.  Rhodiola (Rhodiola rosea), is an herb which can improve memory and increase concentration by stimulating the immune system (100 mg. daily).

Bacopa(Bacopa monnieri), is an herb that works to ease anxiety and decrease blood pressure, which in turn helps to retain memory and fight forgetfulness.  It also aids in the production of the neurotransmitter G which is for GABA- The Brain’s Feel Good Chemical (200-400 mg divided in daily doses.

Gotu Kola (1000 mg. daily) increases memory function, and ginkgo biloba has long been shown to aid in the prevention of age-related Alzheimer’s disease.  As we saw when we talked about elephants never forgetting, vinpocetine (10 mg. twice daily) is a blood thinner that enhances brain circulation and also improves oxygen use. Ginseng has been used for centuries because it enhances one’s mood, improves memory and attention, increases physical and mental endurance, and improve test scores.

Essential oils used in aromatherapy are great brain boosters and memory enhancers.  Rosemary, the “herb of remembrance” is the best known aromatherapeutic remedy for improving poor memory, increasing concentration, aiding in fatigue and improving mental clarity.  Peppermint essential oil perks up the brain and makes it ready to remember.  Basil clears up a foggy head and increases mental clarity.

So remember to take care of your natural health.  And if you can’t remember, don’t forget to take these herbs and eat healthy!
