F is for Face Fixes From the Frig

Homemade Facials from your Frig for your Natural Beauty

Looking for a pick me up for tired and dull skin?  Look in your frig!

Looking for a remedy for acne?  Look in your frig!

Looking for a way to reduce oily skin or the appearance of wrinkles?  For natural beauty, you don’t have to look much further than the inside of your refrigerator or kitchen cabinets.

For dull and dry skin or hair, grab some of that real mayonnaise out of the frig and smush it all over your face.  Always remember when you’re applying lotions or creams or fruits and vegetables to you skin, use circular and upward motions to get a head’s up (or a face’s up) on how gravity tends to pull us down.

Need a little rejuvenator for your face after a long day or a short sleep?  This Cucumber, Yogurt and Parsley Facial from your frig will work great 1 tsp. Cucumber
1 tsp. Parsley
1 tsp. Plain Yogurt

Puree the parsley and cucumber really fine and mix in the yogurt to form a smooth cream.  Apply it to your face and leave the mask on for approximately 15-20 minutes for best results. Rinse with water. This will moisturize while it perks you up.  Only make as much as needed for each application, as it does not keep – even in the Frig!

For Acne, grab some eggs and honey and whip them all together for a face mask.

To dry up your oily skin, mix 2 TBL. of Baking Soda (see previous post D is for Double Duty Kitchen Cosmetics – Baking Soda Does It!) with enough lemon juice or tomato juice to make a thick paste and apply to the face and neck area. Massage gently and avoid the sensitive area around the eyes.

D is for Double Duty Kitchen Cosmetics – Grapefruit for Face & Hair

Grapefruit for Natural Health and Natural Beauty

Grapefruit is one of the kitchen items that work double duty for you.  Grapefruit is fabulous for your natural health.

Those luscious grapefruits are chock full of Vitamin C for skin care and fighting colds.  Grapefruits have lots of color which indicate a wealth of  carotenoids like lycopene, which can help to reduce the incidence of prostate cancer in men.  Diets high in vitamin C have been linked to a reduced risk of cancers of the esophagus, bladder, breast, cervix, colon and stomach.

OILY SKIN GRAPEFRUIT FACE MASK — Grapefruit is also wonderful for facials to reduce oiliness on your skin.  Combine 1 teaspoon of grapefruit juice with one teaspoon of sour cream and an egg white that has been beaten up till fluffy.  Mix it all together and apply to your face.  Leave it on for 15 minutes and wash off with warm water.

1-1/2 cups white table sugar
8 drops grapefruit essential oil
2 drops red food coloring (optional)
1/4 cup jojoba oil
1/4 cup liquid castile soap

Place sugar into a large bowl and stir to break up any clumps. Add the essential oil.  Add one or two drops of red food coloring if you’d like it pink! Mix very well to make sure the color is evenly dispersed. Add the jojoba oil and Castile soap next, a little at a time, stirring after each addition.    Mix well and the pour into clean container.  To use, stand in the tub or shower and massage the sugar scrub onto your skin from head to toe. Rinse.  Inhale. Smile.

M is for Melons – yuMMy & good for Making Masks

YuMMy Melons for Natural Beauty and Natural Health

MM, good!  Melons – Cantaloupes, Honeydew, Crenshaw, you name it, they are yuMMMMMMy!

And so good for you too.  Eating whole fruit gives you lots of fiber.  And cantaloupes are especially full of potassium which can lower the risk of heart attacks and strokes.  They’ve got lots of Vitamin C which keeps you naturally healthy, and their bright orange color means they are full of beta-carotene which is an antioxidant that can prevent cancer and keep your eyes healthy!

Honeydew, cantaloupe, and watermelon all help tone aging skin thanks to vitamins A, B and C.  For an anti-aging and refreshing homemade facial mask, cut paper-thin slices of fresh melon and place them on your face and neck  and then lie down and relax.  . Let sit for 15-20 minutes, and then rinse with cool water.   Your skin will feel refreshed and you will have a youthful glow!

For an even more moisturizing and energizing face mask, try mixing together cucumber with a honeydew melon!  Take half of one fresh, small sized cucumber, with the nutrient rich seeds and skin.  Put the cucumber together with a few slices of peeled honeydew melon and an egg white into a blender or food processor.  Blend to form a cream-like paste.  Apply to your face using with circular upward motions using your fingertips.  (Be careful not to get the mixture in your eyes.)  Let it sit for 10-15 minutes, then rinse off with warm water.  The cucumber and melon, while enriching your skin with lots of nutrients,  will soak up any oils and dirt that are clogging your pores. This mask will also be softening your skin for all ten minutes, giving you a smooth, radiant glow to your skin. Rinse this mask off with cool water and pat dry with a towel.

A is for Anti-Aging Skin Care At Home

Anti-Aging Facials for Natural Beauty

No one wants to deliberately look old, no matter how much of a Healthy Senior Woman you might feel you are.  Here’s a great recipe for an anti-aging facial mask you can make and apply at home, with an explanation of all the ingredients and why you should use them!

1 TBL. of French Rose Clay – Rose Clay is deeply hydrating and moisturizes the skin.  Clay draws bacteria and impurities to the surface which can then be exfoliated for removal.  Clay also absorbs excess oil.

1 TBL. of instant oatmeal or finely ground regular oatmeal – Oatmeal is a great exfoliator and smooths the skin.

1 tsp. of honey – Honey is a humectant and moisturizes the skin, an antioxidant which protects the skin, and honey is the only food that never goes bad – sounds good for your skin!

1 tsp. of avocado oil – Avocado oil is one of the richest emollients.  It is also high in sterolins, which help to reduce age spots and help heal sun damage and scars

1 drop of frankincense oil – Frankincense is known for its ability to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles

1 drop of neroli (or lavender) oil – Neroli oil has antioxidants that prevent premature aging

1 drop of rose oil – rose oil contains Vitamin B3, which boosts circulation to the skin and helps prevent redness.  And rose oil is the most feminine of all essential oils – makes you feel all “girly!”

To make this anti aging facial mask, use water to make a paste of all the ingredients. Apply the mask mixture to the face for 15 to 20 minutes and then rinse off with warm water. Pat dry the face with a clean towel.  Put on your favorite moisturizer and look in the mirror.

Anti-Aging masks work!

A is for Apple – A fAciAl A dAy

Apple Facial for Natural Beauty

An apple a day might keep the doctor away, or at least keep your spa bill down a bit!  I do advise going to an esthetician as often as you can to get your face tweaked professionally (see E is for Esthetician – An Expert in Skin Care), but in between you can go to your kitchen and whip up a homemade facial mask.

It’s autumn soon and that means apples.  Where I come from, the first apples are the Macouns and boy, are they crisp and cool and yummy!  That crispness will add a bit of life to your tired face and invigorate your skin and wake you up!

You can grate an apple and mix it up with some honey for a great facial mask.  Or try any one of these recipes, mixing apples with cucumbers:

CUCUMBER APPLE MASK – This combination will add a little gentle exfoliation to your treatment.  Put half a cucumber and half an apple into the blender with a teaspoon of honey.  Blend and apply to face, avoiding the eye area.  Leave it on for 15 minutes, then rinse off with cool water and enjoy the refreshed feeling.

Here’s a recipe from our friends at Spa Index:

Apple Cucumber Facial Mask

1/2 cucumber, peeled
1 egg white
1/2 teaspoon lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon lime juice
1 thick slice of apple
Several mint leaves
1 drop lime essential oil

Combine all ingredients except oil in a food processor and process until smooth. Add the essential oil last and mix well. Refrigerate the mixture for 10 minutes.

Apply a layer to your clean face and neck area and leave it on for 20 minutes. Rinse well with warm water. Apple Cucumber Facial Mask is best when used immediately as the ingredients are perishable. The leftovers can be refrigerated in the coldest section of the refrigerator for up to 1-2 days but should be discarded after that.
