D is for Dieting – 10 Do’s and Don’ts

#1 – Do Eat Breakfast – Get up in the morning and get a good start!  Greet the day with some nutrition to keep you going great all day long.  Naturally Beautiful Women eat like a Queen at breakfast, a Princess at lunch, and a Pauper at dinner.

#2 – Do Eat Your Fruits and Vegetables - Your body craves real food like fruits and vegetables full of nutrition.  Don’t substitute healthy food with “diet foods” full of chemicals and salt.  Eating real food will not only nourish you, it will keep you on the right track with healthy habits for a lifetime of naturally healthy weight.

#3 – Do Drink Lots of Water – Your body is mostly water and we need to keep it filled up to the brim.  Water makes everything flow smoothly, in, out and through.  Drinking water will make you feel full and will flush everything out to help you lose weight and have beautiful skin and hair.

#4 – Don’t Just Sit There – Do Get Up and MoveGet up and take a walk.  NOW!  Don’t think of it as exercise, think of it as life. Moving improves your mood.  Moving will help you sleep. Moving will increase your energy level. Moving can improve your sex life.  Exercise doesn’t have to be hard, it can be fun.  And exercise can help you lose weight!

#5 – Do Learn Portion Control – - Size Does Matter when it comes to dieting!  A proper portion of meat, poultry or fish is the size of a deck of playing cards ((3 ounces).  Fruit, vegetables, pasta or grains – Half a baseball = one serving (one-half cup).  A Serving of cheese is the size of your thumb (one ounce).  One serving (one cup) of yogurt or chopped fresh greens is like holding a tennis ball in the palm of your hand.

#6 – Do Eat When You’re Hungry!   Don’t eat when you’re bored, tired, working, angry, or watching TV!  Eat to nourish your body, not as a substitute for anything else.

#7 – Do Eat Sensibly – Don’t Follow Fad Diets – If you eat only grapefruit or hot dogs for a week, I guarantee you’ll lose weight.  And I also guarantee you’ll gain it back immediately – and then some.  Eat for a lifetime, not for a momentary decrease of a number on a scale.

#8 – Don’t Rush!  Do eat mindfully.  Take pleasure in what you’re putting into your body to nourish and sustain it.  Make eating a passionate adventure. Eat until you are satisfied and when you are finished, stop and reflect on the experience.  Then go on to do something else besides eating!

#9 – Do Eat Good Fats – Don’t neglect the need to eat all good foods, including the good fats.  Fats nourish your brain and flavor to your food to make you feel fuller (See previous post on C is for Coconut Oil – King of Fats).

#10 – Don’t Give Up!  Made a “mistake?”  So what?  You’re only human.  Today is a new day and you have these 24 hours to do things right.  As Eleanor Roosevelt so wisely put it, “”Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery. Today is a gift. That’s why we call it ‘The Present’.”  DO give yourself the present today of being kind to yourself and begin your journey to natural health and natural beauty.

Q is for Quinoa – Quick, naturally healthy, and Quite delicious

Quinoa is Quite delicious

Quinoa is a whole grain (actually it’s a seed, not a grain) that has been around for thousands of years since the Incas in the Andes used it as a staple for their diets. Vegetarians and vegans should really pay attention to quinoa as it contains one of the highest levels of protein, as well as Vitamins E and Bs and calcium and iron.  Quinoa is actually a complete protein containing all eight of the essential amino acids one needs to form protein.  And for those of you who are gluten-free or trying not to eat wheat – quinoa is a perfect choice for your natural health!

Whole grains are particularly beneficial to a healthy diet.  Quinoa, especially, is very high in fiber which helps to lower the risk of cardiovascular disease and heart attacks by lowering bad cholesterol and blood pressure.  Fiber aids digestion and reduces the incidence of constipation.    Adding more fiber to your diet also lowers your risk of certain cancers, and quinoa should be incorporated into the diet of postmenopausal women, as it has also been linked to a reduction in the incidence of breast cancer.  Quinoa has a high magnesium content which can aid people with migraine headaches.

Quinoa is easy to cook and it stores well for future use.  It’s a great way to start off the day with a protein boost.  Mix your breakfast quinoa with berries, seeds, nuts and dried fruit; add a little yogurt or milk and you’ll have a breakfast that is full of natural health.

Quinoa can be substituted for other grains like couscous in Tabouli, or rice in Pilaf.  To make quinoa, follow these simple directions.

  1. Check the label of the package to see if it’s been washed and if not, rinse the quinoa (to remove saponins, natural coatings which are harmless but can be “soapy”) and then drain.
  2.  In a saucepan, put one part quinoa to two parts water – e.g. 1 cup quinoa, 2 cups water. Bring the quinoa and the water to a boil, cover, and then reduce to simmer and cook for 10 more minutes.
  3.  Turn off the heat, keep the cover on and the pan on the stove for another 5 minutes.
  4. When done cooking, the grains will become translucent, and the white germ partially detaches and looks like a little white tail.
  1. Fluff quinoa gently with a fork (don’t mix with a spoon or it will turn to mush).

I is for I’m back!!!!! And I’ve got Ideas and Innovations and lots of good Information!

Hi again!  I’m back with a whole bunch of new ideas and inspiration about natural beauty and natural health for all of you great women (and men!) out there.  Today’s a brand new day full of brand new beginnings to take care of yourself, mind and body and spirit – inside out and all around!

I’ve been halfway around the world and tried new foods and new products.  I’ve seen how other people think about beauty and what they feel about food and I’m so excited!

While I was in Spain, I bought some real Moroccan Argan Oil and it really does work to keep your hair shiny and healthy.  And while I was in France, I slathered my face and skin with local olive oil and my whole body feels like a baby!  I tried an authentic Hamman and it was hot and steamy and holistically healthy!  I took baths in Sea Salts that came straight out of the Mediterranean and it soaked away my stress and exfoliated my old dead dry skin.

I ate cheese that practically came right out of the cow that minute, and I drank wine made with the grapes I saw harvested.  It was a great trip, and I’m glad to be back here and writing about it for all of you.  I’ll start the alphabet again this week and we’ll have a blast from A to Z for you and me!

A is for Awake! Anew! Again! A BrAnd new day!

A New Beginning for your Natural Health and your Natural Beauty

Good morning!  It’s a brand new day and you get to start all over again.  Anew!  Afresh!  Alive!  Amazing, isn’t it?

Don’t look back.  Maybe yesterday you didn’t eat enough fruits or vegetables, and you forgot to drink some water.  Maybe you didn’t wash off your makeup last night, or never put any moisturizer on your face.

Guess what?  You get to do it today.  Anew!  As trite as it might sound – Today really is the first day of the rest of your life.  You get a new chance to do it right today.  You get to choose how to live today.  A new beginning.

For the next twenty-four hours, you can choose what kind of person you will be, what kind of day you will have.  Will you be happy?  Or will you be sad?  Will you eat a healthy meal or two, or will you choose to just shove some stuff into your mouth?  Will you drink that glass of natural health that we call water?  Or will you choose something sweet and syrupy and not so good for you?

Maybe today you have a crisis at work, or a sick family member who needs care.  Maybe today you can’t find a job or you’re losing your home.  Shit happens.  We know that for a fact.  But maybe just for a moment, a little teeny moment of today, you can remember that this too shall pass.  There will be a tomorrow.  Another brand new day.  Another chance to wake up and begin again.  Anew!  Alive!  Again!

I is for Immune System – What Is It – Part 1

I is for the Immune System

What’s up, Doc?  Bugs and Popeye had it right – Eat your fruits and vegetables, like carrots and spinach and you will build up your immune system.

What exactly is the immune system?  The immune system is made up of special proteins, tissues and cells and organs that defend us against all of the germs and microorganisms we come in contact with every day.  The cells involved are white blood cells, or leukocytes, which seek out and destroy disease-causing organisms or substances.

The lymphatic system, consisting of small organs called lymph nodes, is the main component of the immune system is the lymphatic system.   The lymph nodes are located all through the body, especially in the throat, the armpit and the groin.  These nodes produce lymph fluid which consists of white blood cells that circulate throughout the body.

The white blood cells are the main fighting soldiers in the body’s immune system. Their purpose is to fight and destroy any foreign or diseased cells that are trying to attack the body. A raised white cell count is usually a sign of infection, because the worse the infections, the more white cells are present to fight it.
